How does moss spread so fast?

• You could blame spores floating in and landing on the green, but that takes a long period of time.
• Moss can move by much quicker method….
• Each time you mow and cut off a tiny piece of moss, it has an amazing ability to start all over again.
• Within 72 hours after getting wet, tiny pieces of moss - the size of dust- will start to send out little rhizoids to hold it in place on your golf greens.
• Once moss is anchored down, it pickups up water through its skin, starts to swell up and grows rapidly.
• It secretes an acid to push aside green grass and spreads quickly

• After spraying, the moss turns a bright green, indicating that the moss cell walls are rupturing.
• The following day, the moss will be brown and when applied according to the label, the rib line deep below the moss will be brown too.
• Brown moss doesn’t secrete acid so it is perfect for seed germination.
• If you want, just spread some green seed (bent or poa) on top of the brown moss, step on it and it will grow right through the moss.
